If you have ever imaged yourself being out in nature, far from civilisation, your journey brimming with adventure as you explore the wild and with only the absolute basics – well, maybe not the basics, some luxury items would be good – then your dream can be realised by following the African Ivory Route. This route has been mapped out through some of South Africa’s premier game parks, over a number of mountain ranges and across several eco-systems. It’s a 2000km voyage therefore at least a fortnight needs to be set aside to attempt the entire route.

For a more down to earth experience there are guest houses. Less expensive than hotels, they offer a more homey environment, as well as more privacy. Converted from a private house it’s a much gentler environment and for those with furry friends, there are also pet friendly options. They are usually well situated with shops and places of interest nearby. Being so small it offers a much more personal and intimate attention to it’s upkeep, leaving you with a more polished and homely experience.
