One of Nigeria’s far northern states, Bauchi has abundant natural and cultural attractions. Known as the “pearl of tourism and hospitality” Bauchi is only just beginning to realize its potential as a tourist destination.

Bauchi’s main focus of tourism usually revolves around the Yankari Game Reserve. However, there is so much more to be explored in this state. Bauchi State has the largest number of forest reserves in Nigeria. Bauchi town alone boasts several notable tourist sites: Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa’s Tomb, the Central Market, Central Mosque, First Mosque, State Library, Emir’s Palace, Geji Rock Paintings, Shardawanka Cave and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium with an Olympic-size swimming pool, a multi-purpose indoor games hall and a games village. The Mbula and Jakiri sacred rocks in Dass Local Government Area and the Malam Zaki in Azare, are also worth visiting.

Yankari National Park is a large wildlife park located in the south-central part of Bauchi State and is arguably the country’s most popular tourist destination. Whilst visitors will be able to spot Lion, Buffalo, Waterbuck, Bushbuck and many other mammals, the park is home to the largest population of elephant in West Africa. The best months for game viewing are said to be between February and April when the vegetation is less dense. Birdwatchers will be kept busy identifying the 350 resident and migratory birds that can be found in the park. Dotted through the park are several natural warm springs, the largest of which is the Wikki Warm Spring. The spring is fed by the Wikki River and warmed by underground geo-thermal activity. The park offers several accommodation options.
