Most of the older homes are located on the east and west side, featuring architecture dating from the 1850’s Victorian era, as well as modern day homes. The new commercial developments blend in superbly with the old town charisma. The main retail area is located in First Street, downtown Benicia, and features quaint antiques and boutique stores, unique specialty stores, as well as superior restaurants. The pedestrian friendly city encourages visitors and residents that like to bike and walk, to take in the essence of the city.

Although Benicia has a thriving community with bustling growth, it maintains its historic infrastructure and natural beauty. Downtown Benicia feature many historical buildings such as the State Capitol, and the Benicia Historical Museum at the Camel Barns.
