More info about Brakpan

The East Rand of Gauteng is perhaps not one of the more dazzling and glitzy regions of the province, but there is plenty to see and do in this part of the world, particularly in the town of Brakpan. Brakpan is one of those places that many seem to know about and then again many don’t seem to know about, but the facts are simple; it is laidback, charming, boasts a convenient location, and has an impressive array of activities to enjoy. Brakpan, along with other cities such as Benoni, Germiston, Springs, Kempton Park, Alberton, Edenvale, Boksburg, and Nigel collectively form what is now known as the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan.

Brakpan may have an unusual name (named after a pan of brackish water), but it has a long history and modest origins; initially, it was established as a farm and eventually became a municipality in 1919. Today, Brakpan remains humble and friendly, but it has a lot more for visitors to enjoy in terms of recreation. The suburb finds itself in easy proximity to the highly popular Carnival City that has a wide variety of entertainment to keep the entire family busy for hours. Another very sought-after recreational amenity is the fabulous East Rand Shopping Mall, which not only boasts a stunning plethora of shops and restaurants, but also has a ten-pin bowling alley, movie theatres, and an ice rink indoors, while the outdoor complex features fun-filled water slides and activities.

Many of the East Rand attractions are also in close proximity to the suburb of Brakpan namely the Bruma Lake Flea Market, the Wesbank Raceway, the Jan Smuts Lake, and the Rietvlei Zoo and Nature Reserve. Furthermore, the impressive international airport of OR Tambo is conveniently located within a reasonable distance from Brakpan.
