More info about East Caprivi

Known as Namibia’s very own mini version of the famous Okavango Swamp is the lush and fertile terrain of East Caprivi. East Caprivi is indeed a diamond in the rough and stands out in a country that is known more for its vast desert spaces than leafy greenery. East Caprivi is a confluence of 4 mighty rivers and features swamps and flood plains – a tremendous sight for any visitor on holiday in this Southern African country. A popular way of exploring this supreme natural spectacle is usually done by canoe where the traveler can savour the smells and colours surrounding them at a leisurely and relaxed pace. The small town of Katima Mulilo is usually the disembarkation point from which to explore the swamps; it is from here that visitors get the fantastic opportunity of meandering down some of the greatest rivers in Africa such as the Zambezi and Kunene. Katima Mulilo has a few safari lodges for people who want to enjoy that type of expedition, while favourite pastimes in these parts include fishing, game viewing, hiking, and other general outdoor activities. Although wildlife in the East Caprivi area has suffered tremendously due to poaching and other destructive elements, initiatives have been undertaken in recent times to improve the numbers and diversity of species with great success having been met already; there is certainly enough wildlife viewing and bird watching to be seen in these parts during a safari. Another attraction in East Caprivi is its very own art centre where distinctive pieces of pottery can be viewed and purchased as well as other items like wood carvings and basketry that all highlight the distinct local flavour that makes this Namibian jewel so special.
