Namibia has become the destination of choice for those wanting to really get away from the cut throat nature of the rat race and recharge their bodies and minds. The small town of Gochas located in the south of the country is the ideal venue for when you just need to get away from it all. Gochas is picturesque and charming, but its best feature undoubtedly is its seclusion. Its well away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities and really helps you reconnect with nature and with yourself. Traveling along the gravel road that takes you to Gochas leads you through the iconic Kalahari Desert where you will have the marvelous privilege of viewing undulating sand hills that are dotted with trees and shrubs. The contrasting effects of the red of the desert terrain against the white of the dry Aoub River rocks is a curious as well as a resplendent sight. Gochas is perfect for 4WD drive excursions and maybe even for quad biking throughout the surrounding area; of course exploration can be done in the form of hiking and bicycling – perfect for discovering your surroundings at your own pace. Gochas also has its own small piece of history as there are a few grave sights in close proximity stemming from the time of the First World War, while the Stampriet Farmers’ Centre is the place to buy fresh vegetables and fruit. For those that want to get out of Gochas for the day, the popular Fish River Canyon is in easy access, while travellers can also follow the dry Aoub River all the way towards the South African border where they will also find the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park.
