This town is one of the lesser-known and unspoilt parts of Benin in that is has not been developed to the extent of some of the bigger towns. Situated in south-western Benin about 35,000 inhabitants live in a commune around the Mono River that flows into the sea at Grand Popo and forms a frontier with Togo.
Grand Popo is a plateau rising gradually to the heights of the Atakora Mountains if you want to go more inland from this coastal town. In 1999, the Villa Karo was built and it serves as the Fenno-African culture centre where you can experience the ethnic history of the area. Interestingly, this area was nearly history when the advancing ocean destroyed part of Grand Popo during the 40’s and this town has been rebuilt slowly over the years. For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
