This town is one of the lesser-known and unspoilt parts of Benin in that is has not been developed to the extent of some of the bigger towns. Situated in south-western Benin about 35,000 inhabitants live in a commune around the Mono River that flows into the sea at Grand Popo and forms a frontier with Togo.
Grand Popo is a plateau rising gradually to the heights of the Atakora Mountains if you want to go more inland from this coastal town. In 1999, the Villa Karo was built and it serves as the Fenno-African culture centre where you can experience the ethnic history of the area. Interestingly, this area was nearly history when the advancing ocean destroyed part of Grand Popo during the 40’s and this town has been rebuilt slowly over the years.
