If you’re looking for the perfect starting point to begin exploring the scintillating Garden Route then the rustic town of Heidelberg is one of the best locations to do it from. Founded in 1855 and named after a German town by the same name, Heidelberg is the perfect destination for a holiday revolving around the Great Outdoors.
With its absolutely superb location travellers to this dazzling Garden Route gem can look forward to a brilliant kaleidoscope of wildlife, plants, and bird species. Heidelberg is indeed a spectacular natural paradise of note as it features the majestic peaks of the Langeberg Mountains in the background, which creates a dramatic setting, and has the tranquil waters of the Duiwenhoks River meandering past creating a breathtaking idyllic enclave that is perfect for a vacation. The Duiwenhoks River merges with the Indian Ocean via the hamlet of Vermaaklikheid and empties into the Duiwenhoks Estuary; this estuary is one of the last un-spoilt estuaries in South Africa and it is well worth a visit as it provides terrific photo opportunities.
While the Mediterranean climate of the Western Cape makes it possible to visit Heidelberg at virtually any time of the year, travellers are urged to head there during Spring when the surrounding landscape is magically transformed into an escarpment of colours by the emergence of a stunning assortment of flowers throughout the Garden Route.
