King Williams Town started as a mission station back in 1834 and is one of the most history-laden towns of the Eastern Cape with a wonderful multitude of activities to enjoy. Just 50km outside of East London, King Williams town is also in close proximity to Bisho and Umtata – the area Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki both hail from. King Williams Town boasts a strong heritage with its many beautiful stone buildings strongly reminiscent of the Frontier Wars as well as a number of interesting museums all depicting the town’s colourful history and impressive cultural legacy. Top museums to visit here includes the magnificent Amathole Museum, which pays fantastic homage to the mammals of Africa with an exhibition said to be the biggest of its kind on the continent, while another must-visit museum houses the body of a hippo named Huberta who walked a staggering 1500km from the province of KZN to the Eastern Cape... For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment. Not recommended for those who want privacy, this is best suited for those who wouldn’t mind meeting various other interesting travellers.
