The Klasies River Caves are a series of coastal caves along the Eastern Cape shoreline, and close to the Klasies River mouth that are deemed the single most important Middle Stone Age fossil site in the world. The caves were inhabited by anatomically modern Homo sapiens, meaning that their physical appearance and behaviour is closely associated to modern man. This group of people survived in the Middle Stone Age period around 130000 years ago. During this era, the earth was a lot colder and the sea had receded, making the shoreline a more hospitable place to shelter and survive on shellfish and other marine life. However, there is evidence to indicate their diet was far more diverse; they were sophisticated hunters that used bows and arrows to bring down the now-extinct giant buffalo and appear to have cooked unknown forms of plant.
