The peaceful village of Macaneta is one of Mozambique’s best-kept secrets. A treasure through and through, Macaneta, which is just north of Mozambique’s capital city Maputo, may take some effort for travelers to locate, but it is definitely worthwhile. To reach Macaneta, visitors need to take a 5 minute ferry ride across the Nkomati River and a 4WD vehicle for 10km across a gravelly sand route. However, it is the fact that it is so secluded that affords guests the chance to really get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the best in peace and quiet Mozambique has to offer. Macaneta used to be just another sleeping fishing village with a single restaurant for travelers to use; today, that same restaurant is still in operation and is a terrific eatery especially if its fish you’re after.
With fresh produce being brought in almost daily and superb Mozambican hospitality, patrons can enjoy dishes such as barracuda steaks, prawns, calamari, crayfish, and a local favourite of peri peri chicken. Make sure to ask for either of the chef’s specialty: a mouth-watering spicy chicken curry or an equally delicious dish of Cajun grilled red fish smeared in a delectable concoction of green peppers, onions, and tomatoes. Macaneta has also earned itself the reputation of having the safest and cleanest beaches in Mozambique. With warm and crystal clear waters, not to mention the beaches being raked clean every day, swimming in these parts is a true and rare luxury. Macaneta enjoys a zero crime rate enabling its guests to have the vacation of a lifetime without any worries or hassles.
