This suburb near Pinetown in Durban is best known for its religious significance. Merely fifteen miles from Durban, and fifty six miles from Pietermaritzburg, this place is central and draws Catholics and other tourists from all over. In 1882 the Rev. Francis Pfanner uttered the quote “If no one else will go, I will” which is still relevant today as visitors flock to see the largest and best-known Trappist abbey in the world. Controversial Trappist monk Wendelin Pfanner, Prior Francis, spoke these words before he went to establish the beautiful Monastery of Mariannhill and the Mariannhill Missionaries.
He volunteered to establish a monastery in Cape Colony, in order to try to adapt their rule to the missionary life.
