The Midlands Meander in central KwaZulu-Natal Province is a series of iconic routes along tree-lined avenues and through fertile green valleys, fields dotted with farm animals and hills overlooking natural forest, waterfalls and streams. The Meander holds some of the country’s finest scenic spots and on the routes (there are 5 in total), resident artisans and artists invite visitors into their studios while adventure activities, restaurants and interesting accommodation facilities complete the picture.

The number of activities are too many to mention and the best way to approach the Meander is to obtain a map either off the website or from the Info Centre in Pietermaritzburg. Your interest will determine the route taken, however, each one has a combination of attractions that will appeal to a diverse crowd.

This route also includes the renowned Piggly Wiggly centre where visitors can enjoy a fine meal and sip wine while their children hop on the miniature steam train (weekends only), play miniature golf and try out ceramic plate painting. Further on is Tsonga Shoes and Bags for one-of-a-kind handmade leather purchases.

Adventure activities on the Meander include hot air balloon trips, zip-lining over the Karkloof Valley, horse rides at Kleinbosch Estate and at HorsePlay, and boating on the Midmar Dam. Trout fishing is a more sedate pursuit offered throughout much of the region.

Culture is catered for at the Zulu Mpophomeni Township Experience where visitors learn the traditions of the Zulu and sample their uMqombothi (beer) made by the womenfolk. Dancing and storytelling is popular.

Beautiful, locally-made arts and crafts are sold from welcoming studios, some owners offering interesting tours.

Worth a visit is the Karkloof Market on Route 1 to purchase farm fresh goods. Restaurants and delis are found along all routes while olive growers, cheesemakers, honey producers, coffee roasters and craft beer brewers are just some of the alternate offerings.

The Midlands Meander is a fantastic way to spend a day out with friends and to make new ones.
