The Johannesburg suburb of Observatory has a special and important position within the annals of the city’s history; it is the home of the first meteorological observatory site that was founded way back in 1903. Because Observatory is situated on a hill, it affords its residents some of the most breathtaking views found anywhere in Johannesburg; in fact, when the weather is good, visitors to Observatory can see all the way to the Voortrekker Monument south of the capital city of Pretoria.
