Being the mother town of the Goldfields, the first town in the Free State and the sister town of Kutlwanong. Odendaalsrus should be a priority stop for all tourists. With all this history and importance surrounding Odendaalsrus, it is difficult to know where to start the tourist activities but it would be best to find accommodation and plan the trip from a central starting point.
Founded in 1912, Odendaalsrus was just another farming settlement and by 1946 it had 40 houses, three shops and a church. Then it exploded into the bustling town with the discovery of the richest gold reef in the world. The farm Geduld, became the centre of mining activities in the area as it was the site where they stuck gold. Situated between Kroonstad, Allanridge and Welkom, Odendaalrus was incorporated into the Matjhabeng Local Municipality in 2000 and it is seen as its mother town. With such industrious mining activities and interesting sites, this is a fascinating town to explore. The sister town, Kutlwanong, was originally a location established about 10 km outside Odendaalsrus to house black people during the apartheid era and has the necessary facilities for inhabitants.
Odendaalsrus and Kutlwanong together boast a population of about 52 000 people. These people form a mix of artists, miners, labourers and professionals which forms part of an ethnic town where culture and religion is prioritised. There are also a variety of sporting facilities from golf to waters ports and a visit to the Dam Park Recreation Resort will leave you feeling like gold.
