If you’re looking for a refuge away from the happenings of Pretoria, then the laidback and idyllic enclave of Rietfontein is perfect for you. Let’s face it, as the capital of South Africa, Pretoria can get incredibly crowded and noisy fairly quickly and living with that day in and day out can get tiring for even the most hardened of city dwellers. This is where Rietfontein becomes a clear choice of residence as it not only provides an escape from the daily grind, but also gives you quick and easy access to a number of other destinations that promises the very best of Mother Nature.
Rietfontein is in close proximity to the Pretoria CBD and is situated between the suburbs of Waverley and Wonderboom South. Because of its superb geographical location, residents and visitors of Rietfontein can be moments away from a plethora of shops and restaurants as well as a wide variety of entertainment outlets. But if it’s Rietfontein you’re interested in, chances are you’re after the many delights and pleasures on offer in the Great Outdoors. The Wonderboom Nature Reserve is mere moments away from the suburb and is mainly famous because of the wild fig found here known as the Wonderboom or ‘Miracle Tree’. This stunning 200 hectare park features a must-see collection of daughter trees that have grown out of the main Wonderboom – that is sadly now a shadow of its former self due to decay and age – as well as the antelope, monkeys, dassies, and birds found in the reserve.
Another natural paradise of note within close distance to Rietfontein is the Roodeplaat Nature Reserve. This reserve is split into sections with the northern parts featuring leisure activities such as canoeing and fishing, while the southern reaches are home to a magnificent bird estuary where a number of bird species make for excellent viewing opportunities.
For a more down to earth experience there are guest houses. Less expensive than hotels, they offer a more homey environment, as well as more privacy. Converted from a private house it’s a much gentler environment and for those with furry friends, there are also pet friendly options. They are usually well situated with shops and places of interest nearby. Being so small it offers a much more personal and intimate attention to it’s upkeep, leaving you with a more polished and homely experience.
