Another of Johannesburg’s renowned art destinations, the Standard Bank Gallery houses an envious collection of artwork that dates back to 1990 when the bank first opened the gallery in the city centre.

The bank operates the gallery as a non-profit patron of the arts and helps to educate the public in understanding and appreciating artistic expression. In addition to the gallery, the Standard Bank sponsors a young artist of the year award and the winners get to exhibit their work at the gallery. The award is a major driver in the creative world and well-known local celebrities such as Johnny Clegg and Sibongile Khumalo were past winners.

At the Standard Bank Gallery, a few resident artists are on hand to discuss their work to enquiring art lovers while guided tours of the facility can be arranged for interested groups. Lunch hour concerts in the large exhibition area are hosted, as are lectures. The frequently-held exhibits are dynamic and showcase all art forms. During major exhibitions, the bank may offer shuttle services between the Gautrain Park station and the gallery, enquire before visiting.

A feature of the gallery is the fascinating collection of African art. The collection includes – amongst others – wooden masks, intricate beadwork and animal skin drums. Other more sinister objects are on view, and typically used during rituals. We suggest spending some time reading about the objects to fully understand their design and purpose. Much of the African art is South African with a sprinkling from other parts of the continent.  

The Standard Bank Gallery is open between 8h00 and 16h30 on week days and half day on Saturdays, and to top it all, entrance is free to the public.
