From originating as an outpost of Carthage in the 7th century BC when it was known as Theveste, to becoming part of the Roman empire in 146AC and changing its name to Tébessa, this capital city of Tébessa Province is a place filled with culture, history and intersting landmarks that will keep visitors busy for days. Consisting of 12 districts and 28 municipalities, Tebessa is located 20 kilometers west from the border with Tunisia.
The city is famous for the traditional Algerian carpets in the region, a phosphate mine, ancient monuments and many museums and temples. Tebessa is home to over 161,440 people who welcome visitors wanting to explore the remnants of the history of the area. The Tebessa codex was discovered in June 1918 in a cave in the region and it consisted of 26 leaves written in Latin by Manichaeans.
