If you’re unfamiliar with the daily happenings and goings-on of the Republic of South Africa and possibly alarmed that you haven’t heard of a place named Tshwane, well relax - Tshwane is just another name for the capital city of South Africa. While there has been much talk about re-naming Pretoria to Tshwane, there haven’t been any steps to make the change legally binding so most South Africans and people outside of the border simply know Tshwane as Pretoria.
The city of Pretoria may be under an hour away from the vibrant and electric city of Johannesburg, but the contrasting features between the two could not be sharper. While Johannesburg is the hub of all things commercial and economic within South Africa, the capital city is more laidback even though it is home to the country’s Union Buildings. It is fitting that Pretoria would be the residence of parliament as there is a distinctly elegant feel to it; with its Jacaranda-lined streets and array of stately embassy homes found in suburbs like Hatfield, Pretoria is indeed a wonderful mixture of old-world sophistication and modern facilities. There is so much for visitors to enjoy here with a diverse assortment of attractions found throughout the city.
If you’re interested in history there are more than enough monuments and museums to keep you occupied with the likes of the Sammy Marks Museum, Melrose House, and the Voortrekker Monument being amongst the most popular sites. Nature lovers have a scintillating collection of nature reserves and parks to peruse with the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary and Wonderboom Nature Reserve being great spots to enjoy the lovely scenery on offer here, while keen shoppers need not worry with the likes of Menlyn and Hatfield boasting superb shopping and entertainment complexes.
