The suburb of Walmer is one of Port Elizabeth’s most refined and sophisticated locales. With its wide tree-lined streets and grandiose homes, many holidaymakers are heading to Walmer to enjoy some of its history-rich ambience as well as its elegant surroundings. Named after the Duke of Wellington who died at Walmer Castle, this Port Elizabeth suburb boasts a central location - it is a mere 5 minutes from the city’s airport and just 10 minutes from the scintillating beaches this part of the world is blessed with. Not to worry though – the friendly city isn’t known for its traffic or noise pollution so vacationers won’t have to worry about unpleasant interruptions distracting their leisure time. Other top attractions in close proximity include Main Road, which is attracting a wide variety of business interests, the pristine Little Walmer Golf Course which has 9 holes, and the Walmer Park Shopping and Entertainment Complex, which has a distinct cosmopolitan atmosphere owing to its upmarket flavour. If you’re keen to try something different, but equally as fun, then take a tour of the Walmer Township where you will visit the local youth centre, have dinner with a Xhosa family, and maybe even be treated to a choir rehearsal. Summer time in Walmer is a glorious and highly anticipated affair as it is in close proximity to a number of stunning beaches, some of them having been awarded Blue-flag status; warm waters, copious amounts of sunlight, and panoramic beauty that make swimming and tanning decadent luxuries. Additionally, Walmer has many of Port Elizabeth’s top sights and sounds in easy reach namely the Boardwalk Casino, the oceanarium, and the Donkin Heritage Trail.
For a more down to earth experience there are guest houses. Less expensive than hotels, they offer a more homey environment, as well as more privacy. Converted from a private house it’s a much gentler environment and for those with furry friends, there are also pet friendly options. They are usually well situated with shops and places of interest nearby. Being so small it offers a much more personal and intimate attention to it’s upkeep, leaving you with a more polished and homely experience.
