Upington is a town founded in 1884 and located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, on the banks of the Orange River. The town was named after Sir Thomas Upington, Attorney-General and then Prime Minister of the Cape. It originated as a mission station established in 1875 and run by Reverend Schröder. The mission station now houses the town museum, known as the Kalahari Orange Museum. The museum is also the home of a donkey statue, which recognises the enormous contribution that this animal made to the development of the region during the pioneering days of the 19th century.
The elevation of Upington is 2742 feet (835 metres). It is the closest large centre to the Augrabies Falls, arguably the greatest of South African waterfalls. The landscape is very arid but the soil is fertile and crops such as fruit are grown in irrigated fields. The area is best known for its export-quality grapes, raisins and wines, which are cultivated on the rich flood plains of the Orange river.

Our first stay was fabulous and when we returned our second stay was out of this world! A warm welcome for a weary traveler after many kms and hours on the road - it made me feel as if I had come home! My room was fabulous - thank you for thinking about the comforts of the dogs and upgrading us at no charge 🐾🐾🐾 - they loved the room and so did I. The food is scrumptious and the staff obviously love what they do - they are so warm, friendly, hospitable! The grounds are big so dogs can stretch their legs and the poor kitties had to scramble for cover when Lexi escaped her leash - Apologies, but no harm done. The location is ideal and safe and I love how u guys are able to plan and think on your feet when parking became a problem. I just parked at your other fabulous guest house. I look forward to my next stay and so have already shared my comments with my friends! I know you were just doing your job 😜😜 but thanks for making both our stays such a pleasant one. Huge shoutout to Louw, Shane, Freddy - actually all the staff from the chef to the groundsman to the admin staff!

Great weather. Stayed at Modern Executive Apartment in Schröder street. Beautiful, peaceful and safe place. I enjoyed the friendly people of Upington and the nice restaurants. Mr D also delivered promptly. Will be back again.
Has everything you'd need to top up or get on your way to Namibia, Botswana, or the far west coast. Amazing stat-over options, and amazing people.

The people seem friendlier and more polite than the city folks. The atmosphere seems relatively low-stressed.
Great mall and friendly people in Upington.
Upington is one of my favorite towns in South Africa. It is pristine, clean, people are friendly and helpful. Lots of things to do. Plenty accommodation to choose from. A perfect stop-over to and from Namibia.
Good to visit my birth town and see the growth.
