Accommodation
Our apartments are tucked in a quiet and safe valley on a Rooibos tea estate in the midst of the wealth of the Cederberg plant life and renowned wild flower displays from late winter to early summer. It is the ideal setting to simply relax and enjoy. However, for the slightly more energetic, free range hiking on the estate is absolutely safe and will present ever changing vistas of mountains and rolling hills. The birdlife is quite prolific – from the Black eagle with its wing span in excess of two metres to the Cape canary. The natural Fynbos is only broken by fascinating rock formations.

Exploring
To explore the West coast and Cederberg region can be a series of exciting discoveries and fulfilment. From Elandsberg it is a mere short hop to the Atlantic ocean with it beeches and rocky shores. One of South Africa’s favourite surfing sites is on this coast, and so is one of the big gannet colonies – always intriguing to watch thousands of these beautiful birds coming and going. In season, whales often pierce the surface exhibiting their size and majesty.

Not keen on the sea? In the opposite direction the road leads to the deep Cedarberg, among the oldest mountains on earth. On offer here are spectacular views, awe-inspiring rock formations, many hiking trails, world famous bouldering, mountain bike trails, rock art dating back thousands of years, and the highest vineyards and wine cellar in South Africa where truly exceptional wines are produced.

A little further to the north lies Nieuwoudtville, the bulb capital of the world with its awesome bulb and other wild flowers in late winter and spring. Close by is the Quiver tree forest where the experience is like being transferred to another planet. Still further north, but within an easy day trip from Elandsberg, is Namaqualand, internationally known for is endless displays of wild flowers in spring.

The closest town to Elandsberg is Clanwilliam, the tenth oldest town in South Africa. The last stretch of road from Cape Town to Clanwilliam is lined by citrus, mango and litchi orchards, and of course Rooibos plantations.

Truly the Cedarberg and West Coast region is a jewel, and Elandsberg Eco Tourism lies right in the heart.

Safari tours
For those who want to learn more about Rooibos and Fynbos, safari tours are on offer. One tour concentrates on Rooibos. Guests are taken to one of the plantations where the all aspects of the plant and its cultivation are explained. They then go to the processing plant to experience the processing from raw material to the final product

The other tour focuses in an informal way on fynbos i.e. – how plants cope with the very hot, dry summer conditions, what they do to attract pollinators, how they protect themselves against insect pests, etc. (we refer to all this as the secret lives of plants). We also visit one of the beautiful rock formations where we explain how they (and the mountains) were formed and the part they play in the ecology of the Cape floristic kingdom. This plant kingdom (or fynbos biome) is one of the richest and most varied plant biomes in the world.

The hosts are very welcoming, even as far as a cold iced tea on arrival. Both Chris and Annette are very informative about the area. The accommodation was clean, and all requirements are met. The garden is spectacular, and an invitation is extended to walk through the garden. Bird life is abundant and the peacefulness just lends itself to pure relaxation. Hope to be back next year.
