Cradled in a loop of the Sundays River, the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet is home to some 200 national monuments. Around every corner a piece of history is revealed to the visitor.

And it is here, in the centre of town, that Merino sheep farmer and breeder, Jan Stephanus Minnaar, built his dream house during 1911. Avondrust (“evening rest”) was to be his retirement home. He lived here with his wife, Maria Magdalena Smuts, “Ouma Smuts”. After he passed away, his daughter, Cora Lückhoff inherited Avondrust. Cora did not want to live in the house and sold it to her brother, Eduard Smuts (Eddie) Minnaar. After his and his wife’s death, Cyril Minnaar bought Avondrust from the estate. His grandfather was Jan Minnaar’s brother.

Property Facilities:
* Secure Parking.

Area Information:
The oldest town in the Eastern Cape, the fourth oldest in South Africa and certainly one of the most atmospheric, Graaff-Reinet lies enclosed by a bend in the Sundays River, overshadowed by the rocky Sneeuberg Mountain within the Camdeboo National Park.

With over 200 buildings claimed as National Monuments and an entire street restored, including its slave cottages, Graaff-Reinet has retained much of the character of a typical 19th century town and is well worth a visit because of it. Known as the ‘gem of the Karoo’, Graaff-Reinet was founded in 1786 by the governor Cornelius Jacob van de Graaff, whose wife’s name was Cornelia Reinet. Her namesake - Reinet House - was originally built as a parsonage and is now a museum with one of the largest living grape vines in the world in its garden. This still bears fruit today.

Although Graaff-Reinet is in the heart of the Karoo Heartland with its flat, sandy plains and incredibly hot summers, it is encircled by the Camdeboo Park, which breaks the sandy monotony with its rich greenness and mountains. Within the park are the Nqweba Dam and the Valley of Desolation, providing some of the best examples of the unique jointed pillars formed by dolerites, which rise to heights of 120 metres in places. This ‘cathedral of mountains’ provides many visitors with an incredible spiritual experience at best and one of environmental awareness at least.

Because of the diverse geography of the area, there is a rich bird and animal life. Within the Camdeboo Conservancy are some 22 farms, providing visitors with a range of accommodation and hikers with some amazing trails. There is trout fishing, horse riding, Graaff-Reinet’s bird club and the national park is stocked with game. There are also specialised tours in Graaff-Reinet for game viewing, rock art, fossil study, township walkabouts and Boer War monuments. A visit to the area would be incomplete without a visit to the little hamlet of Nieu-Bethesda and the Owl House.

In Room Facilities:
All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with private entrances leading out into the tranquil garden behind the impressive Edwardian Mansion.
All rooms boast space, privacy and comfort plus the use of a large pool overlooking the mountains.
Wake up to a full country breakfast.
Avondrust is within walking distance from all shops, museums and restaurants.
A full country breakfast is also offered as an extra.

After a long day traveling we were happy to arrive at our accommodation. Our hostess was friendly and helpful. As it is was hot we changed and went for a cool off in their pool. The size of the rooms are good, luggage is easily accommodated for opening and unpacking. Our room had two comfortable couches to watch tv, the bathroom has both a bath and a shower with plenty of space. Restaurants are either next door or in the same block. Beautiful gardens with the main house being from 1911. They do have off street parking but only a few so book a parking when booking.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful guest house and can highly recommend Avondrust, either for a restful overnight stay or a longer stay in picturesque Graaff-Reinet. We were allocated a spacious family unit in the garden with a stoep with a view of the lovely garden. Our back door opened on to the pool area where a sparkling pool awaited. We did not really use the kitchen much but it was big and seemed well appointed. We were travelling with a teenager and a young adult and appreciated the ample space this unit had to offer. The WiFi and charging station built into the desk was an added bonus. We also loved the bathroom. Although we shared the bedroom, the huge bathroom with big bath, separate shower (with huge shower head) as well as separate toilet ensured privacy. We had safe parking for our packed car. This establishment is excellent value for money and within walking distance of everything. We had a good halfway rest and will return.

This must be the place Graaf Reinet has been build around! Beautiful buildings (1911) rooms, gardens and staff. It was great staying here - thank you! It is very close to some great eateries and shops to spend your time (and money) in.

The pretty main building of Avondrust guesthouse is a historical house from 1911, where they also serve the breakfast in a beautiful parlor. Our room was in a neighbouring building with direct access into the well-kept garden. The quadruple room with kitchenette offers enough space for a family and consequently more than enough for 2 persons. The house and parking lot is secured with a gate. We felt very well in these beautiful surroundings. There are nice bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Perfect location for wandering around this historic little town. The house is just beautiful with so many lovely touches. We were greeted so warmly & made to feel right at home. Our room was so pretty, large & airy with its own little balcony. Excellent breakfast & there is nothing not to love about this little gem.

My husband and I returned to this very special place after 11 years. Avondrust is even more beautiful and incredibly well run by owner Nico and team.
The Family unit was well set up, comfortable, and more than enough space for a busy family of 5! On our doorstep was the communal swimming pool.
Wherever you go you’re met with quaint and charming additions to the well-maintained garden, including all the little seating areas and benches.
Breakfasts are hearty, delicious, and excellent value for money - for R100 (about 8$ USD) there is bottomless coffee, fruit, yoghurt, toast, cereals, and a hot breakfast of your choice.
On the doorstep is the Camdeboo National Park where you can take the in the incredible sights of the Valley of Desolation.
Restaurants are within walking distance.
Staying at Avondrust is an absolute MUST!

This is a haven of tranquility in the middle of town. The gardens are a delight with many novel water features and a very wide range of bird life. The rooms are very pleasant and clean and the owner Nico is very attentive, there is an excellent swimming pool with views of the mountains surrounding Desolation valley, a place that must be visited. Also an excellent breakfast is provided.

Lovely guesthouse! The host, Hester, greeted us with a warm heart. She is clearly passionate about her work. The rooms has air conditioning and electric blankets for cold nights. Breakfast was a treat! Delicious food and coffee. Hester served us wearing a white glove. Beautifully maintained garden and Victorian house!
