This is just a review of the lodge. The activities were excellent too, but I’ll review them separately. I chose Horseback Africa because I wanted to play with lions, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the lodge impresses in its own right. I met a fellow traveler who was a regular visitor, and I understand why. I’m really glad I booked a couple of nights, because it gave me time to relax and enjoy my surroundings. I was traveling solo, and they really went out of their way to make me feel welcome. It’s such an incredibly pleasant and relaxing environment, where I was quite content to just sit in the shade and read. The food was amazing. The staff were incredibly conscientious. The rooms were unique, in a good way. I’d like to go back and try the “Bushman’s Cottage” some time. There’s also a neat hiking trail, leading to beautiful views that feel like Pride Rock. I’m not sure I’d recommend doing the trail solo, though, as I’m not sure what would have happened if I’d slipped and hurt myself.

If your anywhere near Johannesburg, Pretoria, or Gauteng you need to go to Horseback Africa. The location is stunning with giraffe nearby and of course the Lion’s. Learn about the important work they are doing there and did cause go walk with the lion cubs and get to interact with them. The staff is so kind and professional. They have a true love for these animals and it shows. Limited distractions from roads or cell phones makes this an ideal get away. I only did the lion tour but I will be back.

Make sure you book early and check it out.

We really enjoyed our stay at Horseback Africa. We were in the Giraffe Room which was clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated in true African style. We were warmly greeted by Colin and Theony upon our arrival and we found all the staff to be most friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed the horse safari and felt that we could have gone on riding for hours!! Colin questioned us about any previous riding experience and briefed us well before we set off. He chose suitable horses for each guest and we felt safe at all times. It was a marvellous experience and we were surprised at how close we could get to the wild animals. The lion tour was interesting, but unfortunately it was very hot and the lions didn't feel like running about too much. However, we were also feeling the heat, so that was not a problem. We can highly recommend Horseback Africa. Our whole stay was very relaxing and enjoyable. We hope to be back!

Firstly the driving directions you receive from Collins Horseback Africa Are bang on you can’t go wrong. Secondly everybody's so welcoming and what a relaxing place. Loved the fact that you could just walk about the entire area, we took a walk saw loads of game and for my partner to get within 20 feet of her favourite, a giraffe just made her year. The food was fantastic cooked fresh, and in the evening right in front of you on the braai. Totally recommend this place. Will defiantly be going back. Oh and just to say the lions are a must. Totally left my heart behind with them, and have the most amazing pictures as well.

We enjoyed these kind people and familiar entourage... The safaris are very well organised and every kind of rider feels himself secure! Man and horse are matched, great!
The braai at the end of every day is ideal to go over your day again and exchange thoughts and experiences with other travellers and owners...

I had booked into Horseback Africa for the sole purpose of photographing lions on foot. This is the fourth time I have visited, and am very fortunate to being giving considerable latitude with the adolescent lions, in that most of the photos were done with me lying down on the ground. It has taken me a while to build a trust relationship with Colin and his team, in that there is always the potential for the odd nip, scratch or bite that I take entirely at my own risk. The help from the team was 100% and all of us were exhausted at the end (ever tried herding cats!!) The results are some of the best lion images I have captured to date. Thank you!

We had a one day conference for about 20 people, everything went very well and the delegates enjoyed the surroundings very much. Would use Horseback Africa again for a similar function. Great for people to bring their families.

We also did the horse safari which was one of our best experiences in South Africa!

Lots of hidden Gems, small town with a lot of love in it. I’d say spend a week there - exploring and enjoying what the small town has to offer

The little town is so vibrant and full of life. We really enjoyed all of the little shops and the hospitality. We especially enjoyed Opistasie Bar and restaurant, such a lovely set up and truly authentic. The Warehouse was a lovely touch as well.
