Area Information:

The French corner of the Cape, Franschhoek lies in one of the most beautiful wine valleys in the world, just 45 minutes’ from Cape Town and within half an hour of the Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington and Somerset West wine routes.

This traditionally French town is the food and wine capital of the country and one would be hard pressed to dispute the claim. Eight of the top 100 restaurants in the country are found in Franschhoek, there are nigh on 30 wine cellars and over 28 restaurants from which to choose for your gastronomic experience. The Franschhoek valley has recently launched a Cap Classique route that includes nine cellars, within a distance of 4 km, in a combined marketing initiative. The sparkling wine tour includes teaching visitors about the methods of making Cap Classique in a unique attempt to add value to wine consumption.

Originally known as the Valley of the Huguenots, a community of French Huguenots were granted land in this valley by the Dutch government of the Cape, after fleeing their homeland when Protestantism was outlawed in France in 1685. Today, many of the wine farms still bear their original French names and most of these farms have beautiful examples of Cape Dutch architecture.

Franschhoek’s village has a wonderful collection of art and antique shops and galleries and the main streets are lined with restaurants and coffee shops. It is easy to spend a day here and it serves as an excellent springboard to other wine routes and the Four Passes Fruit Route, of which Franschhoek is also part; and there are a number of walking trails in the surrounding mountains, for the more energetic.

Attractions:

Are you a lover of all things culinary? Then the Franschhoek Wine Valley Food and Wine Route should be on your list. Even 300 years down the line, French wine making traditions are still apparent and winemakers still produce classic French cultivars. The route consists of more than 40 cellars and with so many boutique wineries, you cannot go wrong!
The Franschhoek Motor Museum is a motor vehicle enthusiast’s dream come true. The museum provides visitors with the opportunity of reviewing more than a hundred years of motoring history. Set on Johann Rupert’s magnificent L’Ormarins wine farm, the museum has a wide collection of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and memorabilia. Vehicles range from a 1898 Beeston motor tricycle to a 2003 Ferrari Enzo supercar! You’ll find antique, veteran, vintage, post-vintage, post-45 and post-60 cars, all in pristine condition.
Franschhoek bicycle rentals. There is no better way to explore the valley than on a bike. Breathe in the fragrances and take pleasure in the incredible scenery as you cycle around, sampling local cuisine and wine. Renting a bicycle eliminates the hassle of bike racks and the schlep of finding safe storage for your bike
Trot through vineyards, forests and over hills on horseback. Besides the horse trails, other activities in the area include wine-tasting on horseback, hiking trails and fishing.

Franschhoek’s main street offers a variety of restaurants and quaint shops. The host of galleries provide wonderful antiques and art collections. You’ll also find speciality shops such as fromagerie’s, a sofa maker and a chocolate factory.

Upon exploring the area, you cannot miss the Huguenot Monument which stands erect and white in the centre of the town. This monument celebrates the French influence in the area. It was designed by J.C. Jongens and was built more recently in 1945.
Franschhoek is famous for its French history and a trip to the Huguenot Memorial Museum is definitely a worthwhile experience if you’re a history buff.

The Huguenot Memorial Museum aims to uphold the French customs that were brought to the area in the 1600’s. Here you’ll be able to learn how the French made wine, clothes and other products.

The village vibe and how safe it is. Also, everyone can walk to where they want to go, instead of getting into a car every time.

What a fantastic experience on the Franschoek Wine Tram! 10 stars from us. Take some time to research which estates you would like to visit to choose the best route. We chose the Grey route and stopped at Franschoek Cellar, Leopards Leap and Rickety Bridge as these were all child friendly options. We will definitely be back without the kids ;) Also, great service and food at the River Café.
