Area Information:
The unique little village of Stanford, overlooked by the moody slopes of the Klein River Mountains, lies just inland of False Bay, forming the tip of a triangle with the coastal towns of Hermanus and De Kelders.

Peaceful and largely unaffected by change, Stanford is an eclectic mix of shops, galleries, restaurants and coffee shops, and the list of activities for a largely rural village exceeds one’s expectations. Like many of the Overberg towns, Stanford originated as a farm, de Kleine Riviers Valey (the original spelling), and the tree-lined streets today, filled with historical buildings, are testimony to the largely English influence that makes Stanford the third most historically important village in the Western Cape.

The heart of Stanford surrounding the market square - used as a venue for a monthly country market and for the annual Welsh Pony Show - was proclaimed a South African Heritage area in 1995. The original farmhouse of De Kleine Riviers Valey, built in 1785, is one of the oldest houses still in existence in the Cape Overberg and the beautiful stone Church is thought to have been built in the 1700’s as well, although the records have unfortunately been lost.

Two of the ‘must do’s’, when in Stanford are the Birkenhead Brewery, a boutique brewery open for beer tasting and lunches, and the Stanford Walking Trail, which wends its way along the banks of the Klein River through the town and offers visitors some wonderful glimpses of the many birds in the area, including the endangered Blue Crane, South Africa's national bird.

Stanford now has a number of vineyards and more appear to be emerging every year and the local Klein River Dairy’s cheese shop offers some mouth watering options including a local Gruyere, one of the few made in South Africa.

The Salmonsdam Nature reserve is only 15 km away and offers 50 km of hiking trails through some beautiful examples of Cape fynbos. De Kelders and Gansbaai are exciting destinations if you want to watch Southern Right whales and Great White sharks, and the Walker Bay Nature Reserve borders the Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary protected area offering a choice of superb land-based whale watching within natural fynbos of the area.

In Room Facilities:
2 Riverside Suites feature large bathrooms, sitting rooms, and a bedroom with views onto the Klein River Mountains. The third suite features an open living plan, fireplace, a large separate bathroom a covered stoep, and a swimming pool.
Fisherman’s Cottage with double bed, and inside fireplace.

Milkwood cottage offers one large en-suite bedroom, an open plan living area, inside fireplace and outside patio and braai area

We had such an amazing time - I didn't want to go home! The setting is beautiful, calm and peaceful - perfect for a weekend escape. Our dogs had the time of their life exploring the farm. We definitely want to stay again in Summer so we can make use of the gorgeous pool.

We stayed in Fisherman’s cottage which was so quaint. Only had a night but it was lovely being on a working wine farm. The breakfast was delicious. Beautiful views and I can thoroughly recommend it.

Escape the crowds, love the open skies, friendly staff, perfect creature comforts, open fires, wines to float on, and an interesting working wine farm.
We loved it so much that we booked an extra night!
The best place to stay and enjoy the surrounding area. Thank you Andrea, Ashrin and Susan and I met the wine master Tarero! Wow what wines!

I decided to treat some friends for an overnight trip to Stanford and chose Springfontein Sleeps for the evenings accommodation. I can honestly say that the bar has been set high and I can't imagine staying anywhere else in the area - we had a fantastic time! The cottages were booked so we had to settle for the suites which were absolutely beautiful. Neat, tidy and spacious, not to mention situated away from the restaurant and farms social areas making it private and feel like we had the place to ourselves. What stood out most of all was how accommodating the host was allowing us to bring our own little braai along and the friendliness of the staff. I have to especially mention Elizabeth who kept us entertained at the Bar(n) and had us in stitches as well as the chef Mfini who personally came out to make sure our food was on par and we were happy. We will be back, that's a promise!
