Local attractions include: Ushaka Marine World, Suncoast Casino, Durban's beautiful beaches, Gateway Theatre of Shopping and Durban Botanical Gardens. Fashionable Florida Road that leads off the Ridge, south of Mitchell Park towards Windermere, is a hive of art galleries, restaurants and fashionable boutiques in a wash of colour and quasi-colonial, semi-bohemian lifestyle where, what began as a largely residential area, today is a humming commercial part of the city that deserves a visit for the restaurants, coffee shops and listed buildings.

And whilst you're up on the ridge, take a trip to Mitchell Park, the tree-filled family favourite with a resident colony of tortoises, ducks and a wonderful aviary.

Golfers can enjoy a round at either Durban Beachwood Golf Course, Durban Country Club with its 2 championship courses or Royal Durban Golf Course.

For a perfect blend of fashion, food, art, décor and entertainment, spend a few hours perusing the 220 stalls that are the Essenwood Market in Durban.

Ideally situated in Berea Park, under a canopy of trees, you can shop to your hearts content and stay cool during the summer humidity! Bring the entire family and buy a picnic lunch from various stalls to enjoy while lazing in a patch of shade underneath one of the trees. The market area has been paved, making shopping pram and wheelchair friendly!

The guest house is set off the road and it is like escaping from the city into a subtropical paradise. Very quiet, restful and beautiful gardens. The breakfast was delicious (a fruit salad to remember!) and John, the host, was extremely friendly. Comfortable, clean and will definitely recommend to others.

Superb. 5 out of 5
