Bilene is a busy holiday resort area and it is dotted with a wide range of accommodation, bars and restaurants. There are some lovely off road routes around the lake system with some more discreet and isolated accommodation from which to choose. Portuguese and Mozambicans have enjoyed the amazing shores of Lake Uembje for many years.

Briza Do Mar and Muhungu Do Mar are situated in Bilene, on the South of Gaza Province, about 180km North of Maputo.

Bilene is blessed by many lakes and lagoons. The water of Lake Uembje (Bilene Lake) spreads 17km long and 1km wide and has a seasonal connection with the Indian Ocean. The real impact of this man-made channel is not fully known but locals believe it brings life and proliferation of fish. When the passage is closed activities such as scuba diving become difficult outside of the lagoon.

The 27km long and 5km wide lagoon is an ideal family spot with long white stretches of sand for beach games and shallow, calm water for safe swimming. The lagoon does plunge up to depths of 50 meters, but is so shallow near the shores that it's perfect for children. Bilene is particularly popular for water sports enthusiasts, from jet-ski's, water-skiing and parasailing, to non-motorized sports such as paddle-ski's and windsurfing.

Popular activities in Bilene include decent fishing, sailing, diving (in the lagoon and open ocean), kayaking, hiking, canoeing, wake boarding, snorkeling as well as whale watching and boat rides.
There are some lovely off road routes around the lake system as well, with great quad bike trails. A 35km ride through villages and inland lakes go as far as the Limpopo River Mouth. Birders also enjoy the birdlife, with large populations of flamingos and various other water birds visiting the area in the summer months searching the shallow fringes of the water for food, adding a true tropical paradise feel to the region.
