Ons Huisie is a traditional whitewashed thatched cottage, reed ceilings, local crafts. Large shaded patio and braai area. Enclosed luscious indigenous garden, own carport. Renovated kitchen, four plate stove, combi microwave. Cob fireplace. It sleeps two-four: bedroom with a queen-sized bed, mezzanine with two singles. En-suite-shower, separate shared bathroom and bath, wall shower and WC. Pet-friendly. Ideal for couples or a family with young children.

It is situated on the quiet side of the village, yet close to shops. Badge Hill watches over it. It is guarded by the trunk of an enormous gum tree, whose roots once reached through our floor and beyond; now a memorial to itself. We have just the right amount of neighbours and a clear view of the mountains across the fields from our front door.

The coming home feeling starts when you drive into your own carport. A level path takes you to the large latte covered porch and braai area. Relax in the large secluded garden which is fenced making it safe for small children and pets to run and play. There are nooks to relax and read and there is also has an open area to play. There are two lightweight folding garden loungers to seek out the best spots to chill. The large porch has space to wash down mountain bikes.

Enter through the kitchen stable-door into the modernized pine kitchen with electric four-plate hob, Combi Grill-Oven-Microwave; kettle and toaster, basic cooking utensils and crockery and cutlery. The under counter fridge has a small ice compartment. The kitchen has a cosy dining area and leads into the lounge. When it’s chilly, snuggle up to the cob fireplace which heats up and radiates warmth. The renovations were done with accessibility in mind, so even though it doesn’t meet all requirements, space gives an easy flow of movement.

Off the hall area is a bathroom with full-sized bath with wall mounted shower; WC and washbasin. The romantic main bedroom has a queen-size bed, a built-in wardrobe and a shower and basin en-suite; and an oil heater in winter. The kitchen and bathroom have traditional reed ceilings.

Upstairs is the ‘Out of Africa’ mezzanine, with two single beds, a chest of drawers and hanging space, with a view of Badge Mountain.

I went with a friend for four nights. The cottage is very quaint but extremely tiny. Although it sleeps four, unless you are going to be out all day I would not be happy spending time with 4 people there. There is an en-suite room which has a great shower and then a separate bathroom with a bath and toilet. The other 2 single beds are in a loft/mezzanine level accessed by a very steep staircase that is quite tricky to descend as your foot can only fit sideways on the treads, so not ideal for anyone that is elderly or not sure-footed. The kitchen is TINY and I suggest you take your own kitchen knife (there is no sharp knife) and the kitchen table will only fit four people around it with no room for anything except the plates. Even with two of us it felt crowded. There is a lovely fireplace but the smoke collects in the loft area and you must leave that window open or you will not be able to breathe when you go to bed.
We went for work purposes so spent a lot of time in the cottage - one of the reasons we took the cottage is that it was advertised as having WiFi. It really doesn't. It couldn't even cope with us sending whatsapps at the same time. We took a Dongle with in case and that didn't even work so spent the four days on mobile data. I'm sorry it sounds a bit negative, but as a weekend away for a couple who are intending to be out exploring most of the time, it will be fine. If you are planning to spend time at the cottage or you have more than 2 adults, maybe not. Hope this has been helpful.

A snug cottage on the quiet side of the village with a beautiful Karoo garden. We were glad that there were gates at the top and bottom of the steep staircase, so didn’t worry about kids stumbling down in the night. We were very warm by the fire in the cold winter nights, and enjoyed the amazing bird life in the garden. We’d love to go back sometime!

McGregor is very very quiet midweek, would like to visit again at the weekend to see if it comes alive.

Enough good food and wine to enjoy without being commercialized and touristy. Enjoyed the countryside and being “away from it all”.
