Bloemfontein is popularly and poetically known as "the city of roses". The city's Sesotho name is Mangaung, meaning "place of cheetahs". Bloemfontein has since 2011 formed part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, having been in the Mangaung Local Municipality beforehand. Bloemfontein is well known for Naval Hill which is in the heart of the city. It offers a gigantic statue of the late Nelson Mandela as well as a panoramic view of Bloemfontein. The Franklin Game Reserve on Naval Hill is one of only two city wildlife reserves in the world. The other is in Hong Kong. A white horse sculptured on the east side of Naval Hill was a landmark for British soldiers during the Anglo Boer War. The Naval Hill Planetarium can also be visited.
