The lodge is in a private game reserve (Emanzini Private Reserve), situated on the shores of the Albert Falls Dam. The reserve offers a variety of antelope and small wild life (no Big Five), and an especially a wide variety of water and land birds. The reserve boasts over 190 species of birds which we'd like to share with you.
The lodge is a wonderful place to stay for people interested in bird watching and living close to nature in a quiet bushveld setting. Guests can walk or cycle around the reserve. The lodge itself is spacious with an open plan living area, a fire place and game viewing / bird watching deck. The double room has an ensuite bathroom and its own deck. The lodge has a thatched roof with bushveld all around, creating an authentic bush living environment.
Guests can also access the Battle Fields of Natal (British, Zulu and Boer wars) within a couple of hours drive, as well as Big Five game reserves, also around 2-3 hours driving away. The lodge is also not far from the Drakensberg Mountains and the famous Midlands Meander with its wonderful small hotels, B&Bs and country farm style shops and restaurants in a beautiful mountain foothills setting.
Interaction with guests
We will be very happy to show you around the reserve and will provide our guests with a hot breakfast, light lunch and simple dinner. At least one of us will be present throughout your stay to try and help make your stay enjoyable. We speak English, Portuguese, and basic Spanish and Afrikaans. Note: Guests will need to bring their own refreshments. Filtered water, bottled water, ice and refrigeration are available.
Other things to note
Access to the reserve is controlled by a gate and the reserve is fenced with an electric game fence. The lodge itself is not fenced and such the antelope come quite close to the lodge.
The lodge is in a PRIVATE reserve so the other residents' privacy and use and enjoyment of the reserve, as well as the wildlife, must be respected at all times. The reserve belongs to them, which they have kindly allowed us to share with you.
You will need a vehicle for getting to and from the lodge, preferably a high vehicle for the dirt roads around the reserve. However, smaller cars can manage ok as well.
The small city of nearby Pietermaritzburg (about 20 minutes’ drive) has a beautiful botanic garden, wonderful golf course and country club, a museum and a range of restaurants, as well as a couple of shopping centers to browse around.
