We accommodate 14 guests at the Homestead and three delightful cottages, each with their own unique character and romance. Our Valbonne Villa offers the exquisite comfort of a multi award-winning 5-star TGCSA, self-catering villa suitable for 6 couples or 12 guests sharing – fully serviced. We are additionally blessed with spectacular bush locations to enjoy memorable bush dinners under the stars, or picnics at one of our many picnic sites around the property.
Whether it's just two of you or a party, self-catering or from our first class chefs in our elegant kitchens, good food and great atmosphere are assured.

In Room Facilities:

TV Room: We encourage our guests to enjoy the beauty of the reserve and the surrounding area as much as possible, so we have not fitted any of the cottages with TV's. We have a TV room attached to the lodge with DSTV for your enjoyment.

Laundry: Laundry lists can be found in the bedroom cupboard. Please complete the list and notify a member of staff before 10am to ensure same-day service, weather permitting.

Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout your stay at the lodge and the username and password will be provided upon request.

Area Information:

Local Attractions: The tourist office located at Crossing Shopping Centre is highly recommended to seek out additional information regarding local attractions. Below is a list of local attractions that we recommend;
• The Kruger National Park
• The Panorama Route
• Sudawala Caves – the oldest known cave system in the world
• The National Botanical Gardens in Nelspruit
• Chimp Eden
• The Barberton Historic Walk and Museum
• The Makonjwa Mountains Geo Trail
• Horse Riding at Little Stone Haven or Kaapsehoop
• Kaapsehoop village and escarpment walk (wild horses)

Swaziland: If you are looking to buy unique curio goods, we highly recommend a trip to Swaziland for the day. The roads are easy to navigate and a road map is not essential to get there although it is highly recommended for within Swaziland. You must ensure you have a full tank of fuel and your passports before departure.

Property Facilities:

Whether you are looking for adventure or relaxation, with family, friends, or your loved one, Tomjachu offers something for everyone. On our trails, tracks and roads you can hike amongst the abundant plains game and through mountains and valleys, mountain bike through the bush on easy or challenging routes, enjoy a nature drive or guided bushwalk with our experienced ranger, or try your hand at fishing for bass and bream in our dams.

Bird Watching: With over 265 species including seasonal migrants and with a large variety of habitats in close proximity, Tomjachu Bush Retreat is the ideal place for bird watchers to freely roam the extensive tracks and trails without the threat of dangerous animals.

Hiking: With just over 550 hectares of fenced game property to explore, and a number of tracks and trails weaving through grassy plains, mountains and ravines, there are few better ways to explore the reserve than a good old hike.

Fishing: With bream, barbel and bass at South Dam, there's always a good chance of being rewarded with a bite or two and the ever famous "it was this big" could certainly become reality.

Nature Drives: Enjoy an adventurous nature drive in our open game viewer, affectionately named ‘Shrek’, with our guide who will spend time informing you on the history of the area, and interesting facts about the trees, insects and birds.
Drives take place either in the morning or late afternoon carrying on into the evening with sundowners included

Mountain Biking: If you are one for the more thrilling encounter, our mountain biking trails on the reserve will give you the adventure you are after. Our marked trails range from intermediate to technical, taking you up and down the valley.

Attractions:

Our Secret Places

South Dam: The largest Dam on the property, it is home to a large variety of water birds and is a popular drinking point for many of the animals on the reserve – you may even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Cape Clawless Otters. Wile away a few restful hours enjoying a picnic on the grassy banks, or try your hand at fishing out a bass or bream from the still waters.

Zebra Heights: The highest point on the property at 1030m, a steep hike up Zebra Heights brings you to a breath-taking vantage point to look down over the Tomjachu reserve and surrounding mountains. Head to the top in the early morning and watch the African sun begin to paint the sky as the bush below awakens to the new day.

The Gorge & Gordon's Pools: Carved by ancient rushing waters, the granite Gorge descends spectacularly into the valley below. Halfway down the gorge lies Gordon’s Pools, named after Gordon Fillery. Here the thick bush peels away to expose a silent, secluded spot at the foot of a gently trickling waterfall. Fill your lungs with the fresh mountain air and enjoy an afternoon nap in the cooling shade by one of the pools.

Matumi Picnic Spot: On the edge of a stream surrounded by towering Matumi trees, this wonderfully secluded picnic spot is the perfect place to switch off from the world around you and take in the beauty the retreat has to offer. Look out for the shy Red Duiker, and the dazzling colours of the Narina Trogon.

The Lapa: Perched on the edge of a granite rock in heart of the reserve, the Lapa is surrounded with the historic remains of the Great Trek – an old Voortrekker road marked with stones is still visible descending steeply down into the valley. An ideal spot to enjoy a rest stop or picnic on your hike with a cooling breeze drifting up from the valley below.

Symphony dam: This small dam lies tucked into a small gulley below the plains stretching down from the main gate. With views into the hills across the wetland, this little dam is a great spot to let time wash over you whilst watching the Bee-eaters flit in and out of their holes in the dam wall. The orchestra of frogs starts tuning up in the early evening which is when the dam truly lives up to its name.

The Lido:In the heart of the Northern plains lies the Lido (meaning public swimming pool), which takes its name from the many Blesbok and zebra which laze in the sun on the banks of the small watering hole. There is almost always some animal activity around this springwater pan – but please don’t swim in here for your own safety!

Felt at home from the moment we arrived, most personable staff and service, always willing and at hand to give advice and creating a unique experience, such as bush dinners and lighting fires at sundown; beautiful accommodation in keeping with the nature setting and full of local art work; atmosphere of the surroundings is second to none, impeccable nature, varied with hills, open grass land, lush valleys and water, wonderful for strolling and hiking and cooling off in the pool afterwards.

We have thoroughly enjoyed the serenity of the place. Calm, earthy, picturesque views. We also enjoyed the walks through nature and saw the animals at close proximity like never before. The rooms were neatly layout and very clean. Staff is friendly too.

Stayed in a large group of 16 and they did everything they could to accommodate us! The staff are all lovely and made us feel welcome and at home. We all stayed at either Valbonne or the homestead which were equally as comfortable with brilliant views. Would recommend to anyone wishing to travel to South Africa.

I had had the pleasure of sleeping in Patsy (the converted school bus) before so I stayed in one of the containers this time. I was blown away by how cleverly the shipping container had been utilised to make spacious, elegant and comfortable accommodation. The decor is so imaginative and pleasing on the eye. Janine has a wonderful gift for interior design and Gavin knows how to marry form with the wonderful bush environment. I had the folding doors open day and night during my three-day stay and with just the mosquito net between me and the elements. The sounds of birds, toads and wildlife helps to create such a relaxing atmosphere. The hosts are so enthusiastic about their off-the-grid venture and are only too happy to explain their set-up. They have established marked walks around the homestead and seating areas to just admire the beautiful panoramic views. The homestead is just a 10-15 minute drive from the centre of Nelspruit.
Janine and Gav cannot do enough for their guests. They love the area and have established a network of contacts amongst other hostelries and service providers so can help in planning activities and make recommendations to make the most of your stay.
As well as the gorgeous surroundings, the care and attention to detail by the hosts just makes you walk around the plot with a huge smile on your face and all the tension and cares of modern life just evaporate. I loved their four huge hounds, two Great Danes and two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and followed them galloping around Kokiville. I spent many an hour with Gavin and Janine putting the world to rights over a bottle of Windhoek lager or a nice South African Shiraz and replaying the 1995 Rugby World Cup or great moments in cricket. In your fridge, the hosts thoughtfully provide milk. The well-appointed room has as a Nespresso machine with capsules, tea bags, that South African favourite, rusks, and some welcoming sherry. And for those unable to break free of the modern world, there is good Wi-Fi.
The shower has a great jet of water thanks to a pressure pump Gavin installed. There is a barbecue area and, on the decking outside the container, comfortable seats to look at the starry sky and commune with nature. I can’t recommend this place enough. I suggest you extract as much information about the area and activities in the area from your boundlessly enthusiastic hosts. They suggested the Sudwala caves to me and I had a fantastic time exploring the World’s oldest dolomite caves.
