Fantastic stay. This is second visit! Camped at Marula and then at Serengeti. True bushveld experience with wonderfully thought out camps, lots to do, walking, mountain biking, 4x4ing, relaxing….. The fact that we could bring the dog was an absolute bonus.

A day trip from Jo'burg (3hrs) yet a world away.

Staying off-grid in the bush with running hot water (I'd never operated a paraffin shower before), A fully equipped kitchen with a gas hob, a large fridge, and a braai pit outside was all that we needed.

No phone reception was the bonus; kids and adults alike couldn't be distracted by IT so spent the long weekend playing, chatting and eating! A total relax.

Unfortunately, the temperature was way too hot for any of us to hiking, but we were able to cool off in the rock pool and enjoy the fabulous views.

If you're after a re-set, check this place out. Our group of 2 families left feeling recharged and ready to face life in the big smoke once more.

We had the Maroela camp site for ourselves and enjoy the silence and nature sounds. The view from the site was beautiful. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

This is the perfect place if you want a quiet stay in the middle of the bush. I stayed in the kudu lodge with my pet, it was quite secluded. The kitchen was well equipped and everything was very clean and tidy. The highlight was definitely the view of the mountains from the braai area and the private pool. The hosts were very kind and always close by in case anything was needed. Would definitely recommend a stay at Grootfontein to anyone wishing for a break away.

We stayed in the Giant Rock Lodge. It was comfortable. The space was nice and the open windows were lovely in the room. The fridge was a good size and the self catering equipment was sufficient. The splash pool was great, as it was 40+ during our stay. The hiking was lovely. Our dogs liked the space, just not the heat.
This was our 5th stop of 8 around the country.

Just a beautiful rustic experience - proper African Bush Lodge! No electronics, no cell phone reception. Open air bedrooms, our own plunge pool and viewing deck for sundowners, game wandering around the camps, awesome staff and hosts. Such a relaxing weekend! Will be back!

It is a little town but it has everything that you need in the shopping centre.
The Marekele Game reserve has the Big 5 and is not as busy as the other National Parks. The main road is busy being widened.
