Blesfontein Guest Farm is situated just outside Sutherland, in the quiet and remote Tankwa Karoo of South Africa's Northern Cape, Blesfontein is a family-friendly destination in every season of the year.

Blesfontein offers 9 fully equipped self-catering units, each with an inside- and outside fire place for cooking or to enjoy the heat of a cosy "kaggel" fire in winter. The kitchens are equipped with electric and/or gas stoves. Our most popular unit is the Honeymoon Cow Shed. Most of the units were stone built stables which were converted into rather unique accommodation units. The others were old farm buildings converted for convenience, without losing their character.

Dinner and breakfast must be booked in advance. At night, Nicol takes our visitors stargazing in our amateur observatory where we have two telescopes. During the day the freedom of the farm is yours to enjoy. Bring your own 4x4 or hire ours to take a scenic drive to the viewpoint at the edge of the escarpment. On the way you may see Blesbuck, Zebra, Springbuck, Grey Rheebuck, Steenbok and Black Wildebeest, not to mention the Meercat family, the Tortoises, the Skunks, our resident Black Backed Jackals and several bird species.

Children can bottle feed lambs (when in season) and feed our horses, chickens, pigs and geese. Kids can also collect eggs, ride their mountain bikes, swim in the farm dam, meet our small Alpaca herd or milk the goat, Bella. In the unlikely event of Karoo rain, or when you are trapped in a snowstorm (we do sometimes get snow in winter!), you can play table tennis, watch television or play board games in our communal dining room.

What a special place. Wide open spaces to enjoy and recharge. Nicol and Marina are wonder hosts and always available for a chat. A child's paradise, my granddaughter had a wonderful time bottle feeding the lamb, stroking the lying down horses, following the meerkat digging for worms. Accommodation was comfortable, clean and adequate. Nicol's stargazing session was very entertaining and informative. Farm tracks to explore either on foot/bikes or 4x4. The trip to the Escarpment view site was well worth it. The awesome panoramic view over the Tankwa to the distant Cedarberg Mountains in the distance is spectacular. Was very cold but we will be back when it is warmer to explore more and enjoy the farm tranquility.

Astro photographers look no further! Avoid town, this farm offered doorstep magnificence. Such lovely people running it and was an awesome experience with their little animals, the sheep that thinks its a dog, the fat meerkat that wants to be hugged, and LLAMAS! Loved it. Look, its not fancy but it’s more than satisfactory and every need was met. Will definitely return. Sutherland the town was a quite boring and if stargazing is your thing, I would recommend outside of town and Blesfontein was SUPERB!

My wife and I and my daughters family spent most of the day on the farm. Our hosts were very friendly. Our 2 grandsons enjoyed the pony ride. The resident meerkat was a bonus. The trip to the escarpment was very bumpy but in the end it was very much worth it. We will like to go back to the farm one day. But it would be nice if the road could be graded.

Seven of us spent a night on this interesting self-catering farm in April 2018.
The rooms were quaint, spacious and the house was spotlessly clean.
Marina & her husband Nicol were welcoming and very informative.
The resident meerkat stole the grandchildren's hearts. There are beautiful Apaloosa horses and alpacas roaming on the farm. We could drive to the edge of the escarpment on the farm with the most beautiful view of the Tankwa and surrounding mountains.
A great bonus for us was that they have their own big telescope on the farm. Nicol showed us the stars and was very knowledgeable.
The road to Blesfontein is a scenic dirt road.

Blesfontein Guest Farm offers comfortable accommodation with warm and friendly hosts. We returned from the weekend away feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. There was a very friendly and lovable Meerkat, pigs, horses and other animals on the farm. Unfortunately, our time did not allow for star gazing on the farm as we had already booked a tour at SAAO. One of the highlights was the experience of visiting the escarpment that has a magnificent view. The gravel road to the farm is about 25km from the main road and has a few corrugated sections that can take its toll on your vehicle (our number plate fell off!). Would recommend visiting Blesfontein as a place to fill up your day while you wait for the stars to arrive.

We visited from the 20th till 22nd August 2017. On arrival we went to the escarpment as the weather was fast closing in. The view is a must for anybody that loves clear skies and the most amazing view into the Tankwa Karoo. The hosts are superb and the star gazing an eye opener. Spend the Monday exploring the farm on foot with beautiful scenery. Accompanied by the most adoring meerkat. I rate it as the best farm stay we had in years.
