At the Loerie was built in 1883, one of the first buildings of purpose to be built in a newly developing town. Knysna has since grown and developed and this unique guesthouse has too...
Many of the original features of the house tell the story of the many lives this house has lived. It is a charming and characterful home, definitally quirky!
Each room is individual, and each bathroom configuration is unique.
We offer a common lounge area with TV. Our tea and coffee station is situated in this communal area where guests can help themselves to abundant tea and coffee, we keep the fruit bowl stocked and the cookie jar full.
There is a shared kitchen where our guests can prepare a meal - although, Knysna is on the “foodie map” and when eating out, you are spoilt for choice.
Two large veranda's offer extra seating and outdoor sofas.
Each room is individual, and each bathroom configuration is unique.
Our en-suite rooms have shower, toilet and basin in their various configurations– the exposed copper plumbing pipes are an attractive feature and contribute to the unique character of each room.
We have two economy rooms which share a bathroom (shower and toilet are separate), this allows us to cater to guest traveling on a small budget.
Each room has a hairdryer and our en-suite rooms have a safe.
Iron and ironing board are available on request.
Free toiletries are provided, as well as Bath Towels.
The well worn doors and windows illustrate the many years of activity and history that they have been exposed to. If you enjoy buildings with a history, if you enjoy a house living what will become its history, then “At the Loerie” is just the place for you!
Area Information:At the loerie is in the Heart of Knysna's CBD and we are walking distance from a cool little bar called the Bloo Bistro and a handful of restaurants.
Knysna is a colourful town and you will experience all aspect of "life in South Africa" as you wonder the streets.
There are some beautiful buildings in our neighbourhood so a daytime wonder is filled with things to see. Colours and contrasts.
We have the Woodmill Lane Shopping Centre (an old wood factory) close by, the Knysna Mall in the opposite direction, both have good supermarkets and some interesting shops.
The African Market is on route to Woodmill Lane, it is a great place to pick up curios and hand made bits and bobs that make for great gifts.
The Olive Tree is a restaurant i highly recommend and is a stones throw from At the Loerie - the menu is cooked fresh each evening and changes as ingredients come in and out of season.
Papillon At the Heritage is a great breakfast or lunch choice, and under 100m from our front door, Dinner is served Thursday through to Saturday night. Wouter and Peter put a little love into every plate served!
The Knysna waterfront is a 15 min daytime walk (that’s if you don't find something of interest on route) and Thesen Island, which i like to call "Foodie Island" (the restaurants and the views are equally as satisfying) is just beyond and over a bridge.
The natural world in and around Knysna is spectacular and the options are endless -
The extended neighbourhood of Knysna is magnificent, and no trip would be complete without a trip to the Knysna Heads - and may I add, a meal at The East Head Cafe, trust me, you won't be sorry!
Property Facilities:Guests can enjoy comfortable seating on the two generious stoeps or in the communal lounge, which has TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Free WiFi is available to all guests.
Secure off street parking is provided, and the location of “At the Loerie” is very convenient. It is across the road from the Knysna Library, and although it is in the heart of the CBD, it is surprisingly peaceful.
Attractions:The natural world in and around Knysna is spectacular and the options are endless -
The Lagoon offers boat trips, slow and steady, high speed and full of charge, sailing, canoeing, walking on the beaches of Leisure Island or swimming in the summer months, there is something for every taste.
The Knysna Forests offer equal variety, from BBQ and pick-nick facilities, day hikes, plunge pools and waterfalls to mountain biking trails - "Knysna cycle Works" can help you hire a bike and drop it off and collect it from your starting point or you could join a group heading off to explore. "Tony Cook Adventures" is worth checking in with - if they aren't out cycling in the forests they may be kite surfing or kayaking on the lagoon.
Beaches, there are a variety to choose from, the gentle swimming beaches of Leisure Island or Buffalo Bay with its surfers reef with creates an ideal back drop to a beach day.
There are the more rugged beaches too, like Brenton on Sea, and a great restaurant called Butterfly Blu, which surely is a reward be it for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
The Goukama Nature Reserve will have you walking a stretch of sand in comfortable isolation with just the seagulls to keep you company. A trip to Sedgefield and Gerickes Point, if the wind conditions are right will have you daydreaming as Paragliders ride the thermals above.
