Art Deco Villa is built in Art Deco style. The original Smid Street house was built by Tiny Post, a lawyer and partner in Du Plessis and Post, in the 1930s.
The current owner, Louis de Swardt, has decided the best way to preserve this treasure for the posterity is to develop it as a guesthouse consisting of four units. Each bedroom and living room have underfloor heating and double wooden window doors leading out onto sidewalks. The beautiful large indigenous karee, white stinkwood and olive trees are all retained and form part of a quiet, cool garden in the summer rich in bird life.
Middelburg Karoo is as its name says in the heart of the falsekaroo. Surrounded by neighbouring towns like Colesberg, Steynsburg, Hofmeyr, Cradock, Graaff Reinet, Nieu Bethesda, Richmond and Hanover, all around a 100km radius, Middelburg is the ideal place to explore and explore the entire region's wonders. It is also located halfway between Johannesburg and Cape Town, making it a natural "place to sleep".
Three units are ready for use.
Self catering unit 1 has a queen-sized bed and an en-suite bathroom with a bath and a shower. The room also has a double wooden door leading to the patio with patio furniture for 2 people. The room has direct access to a living room with a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge, stove and microwave. There is a dining table for 8 people. The living area has wooden double doors leading to a second patio with seating for 6 people. There are braai facilities directly in front of the patio. Braai packs with Karoo lamb chops and boerewors, are available on the premises.
The guest room has a double bed and an en-suite bathroom with a shower. The room has a double wooden door leading to a patio with patio furniture for 2 people. Braai facilities are available in front of the patio.
The family self catering unit has a bedroom with a double- and single bed, a bathroom with shower and bath and a open plan kitchen / livingroom with a single bed and is ideal for a family with 2 minor children
All three of the patios have views over the garden with green grass and tall indigenous trees full of birds. It's the perfect sundowner spot in the quiet of the Karoo after a long day on the road.
There safe undercover parking behind the guesthouse with a remote-controlled steel gate.

Louis is a very friendly and helpful host. The rooms are very comfortable and spacious and our doggies loved the big yard. Safe parking for the cars.

I was most impressed staying at Art Deco in Middelburg! We felt safe and secure! Fittings and furnishings are top class and Louis de Swart took a lot of care so we would be most comfortable. All I can say again: would gladly stay over there again
Never traveling to the Eastern Cape alone with my dogs before, I needed a 'safe' space to overnight and recuperate during the last leg of our trip. This 'safe' space was found at Art Deco Villas. On arrival, I was met by the owner (and family), welcomed, comforted, given space to breathe - as well as getting invited for a meal!
The facilities were impeccable: clean, in perfect working order and very beautiful.
The yard area is spacious and well maintained, and a definite haven for tired 4-legged souls.
It's been a long time since I felt so much at ease at overnight accommodation a sure sign that the environment created fulfills all (paranoid-mom-type) requirements!!
