Area Information:
Lying close to Greenacres, Adcockvale, Fernglen and Perridgevale, the upper middle class suburb of Newton Park is ideally placed for easy access to beaches, St George's Park Cricket Stadium and Cape Road CBD.
It's essentially a residential suburb with at least three schools in amongst its tree-lined avenues. If that does not paint a clear enough picture then mention Third Avenue dip to anyone and they'll know exactly where Newton Park is. Third Avenue dip occurs where Newton Park crosses through the Baakens Valley along Third Avenue. Before the building of the William Moffat Express way this used to be the major access between Walmer and Newton Park. Built in 1957 it's still popular as a short cut to Mangold Park, Lorraine and Walmer.
Stop at the low water bridge – the hazard of this dip is that it can occasionally flood, and as a result closes for periods - and you'll see a plaque in memory of David Baillie Lovemore, who pioneered this road.
From this same dip in the road begins the Guinea Fowl Trail, a local greenbelt walk through the Baakens Valley (a wonderful greenbelt) along which you should manage a glimpse of local wildlife (rock rabbits, francolin, hares or tortoises, if you're lucky) and indigenous bush. But you'll want to go in fairly large groups, as with all inner city rambles.
Visit St George's Park to find the site of the first tree (which was blown over and isn't there anymore) planted in 1861; there is a plaque to mark the spot, and, take in one of the summer Shakespeare performances at Mannville Open Air Theatre.
