The Rhino's Rest Cottage is a part of the Alpe Edelweiss B&B nestled away in the small town of Gariep Dam next to the Gariep Dam and is popular as a stopover point between Gauteng and Cape Town, Durban and Cape Town and Gauteng and Port Elizabeth. It is conveniently situated just off the N1 Motorway, and has a small and friendly population.
The town is situated close to the dam wall of the Gariep Dam (the old Hendrik Verwoerd dam) which is the largest body of freshwater in the country. The dam is home to fishing competitions, round the dam cycling competitions, gliding from the nearby airfield and relaxation in the summer sun.

Gariep Dam Reviews
The beautiful view of the dam and the magnificent sunrise and sunsets.
The beautiful view of the Gariep dam and the tranquil setting in wich the town is situated.
Spectacular surrounds.
Convenient beautiful day!
Stunning views!!
Views over the dam. The dam itself.
The view and lovely nature.
Sundowners at pool and bar area. Amazing views of Gariep Dam
Amazing to view the dam overflowing.
The location is good when you want to overnight on the trip between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The town itself is a bit dreary - all precast homes that date from when the dam was built - but you don't go there to be indoors.
We were there just before full moon, and the moon on the water was lovely. The dam itself is very impressive.
