My husband wanted to take me away for the weekend for my birthday. So I immediately got stuck into finding the perfect place. I had a list of things it must have; it must be clean, it must have self-catering options, it must be enough of a drive for us to feel we had gone away but not so much of a drive that we felt we had spent more time in the car. It had to have a view, a king size bed, an aircon, a swimming pool. It had to be restful, peaceful welcoming. It took me days to find my selection and then email asking for more information and to then eventually whittle down my list of possible places. Fort Governor's Estate was the chosen venue and on Friday we set off from East London. It took us 2hrs travel time to get there and when we stepped into our cottage it was as if we had entered a parallel universe. One where we were sheltered from all intrusions and where our comfort was of paramount importance. Needless to say the cottage and estate met all of my requirements and then some. It was clean, fully fitted for self-catering options, aircon that works off solar power so guilt free cool air, perfect size swimming pool. Being able to sleep with our doors open was such a treat, listening to the sounds of the evening and watching the stars display their brilliance was soul rejuvenating. Jo has thought of every little thing to ensure her guests comfort and when it was time to leave we seriously considered staying longer. On the Saturday afternoon we went on a game drive led by Sean - it was the very best game drive I have ever been on. Sean's engaging personality and the delight that he so patently takes in pointing out highlights of the trip contributes to the awesome experience that this game drive was. He showed us a treasure that we would only have been able to see in 1 other place on the planet and so we were very fortunate! My husband and I, on our trip back counted how many things we had learnt on the drive and were astounded to realise just how educational this drive had been - without us ever feeling that we were being educated! We had an amazing time and are already consulting our calendars to see when we can go again.

The Old buildings, the stunning churches and Cathedral, the history and the National Arts Festial.
The roads are full of potholes, everything closes very early during the weekend.
During fest, the Long table is a very good place for dinner!

Grahamstown is a lovely town but the terrible potholes and lack of water in town is a huge problem for visitors and residents alike. My sons are students at Rhodes University and struggle immensely with the bad water supply and as they call it "water shedding" as they sometimes go up to three days days at a time without water

Beautiful old buildings to visit! The terrible streets full of potholes make this 5 star town unfortunately a 3 star place!
