The vineyards are an experience at any time of year, especially, in January and February, when they are carrying the heavy bunches later to become excellent wine. Franschhoek means the French corner, and is South Africa's third most celebrated wine town - after Stellenbosch and Paarl. The name refers to the French Huguenots who founded the city in the 1600s, after being chased out of France for their religious beliefs. They brought knowledge of wine and immediately boosted the wine production in the Cape Colony. The city is today the most fashionable of the three wine villages and offers excellent restaurants, antique shops, wineries and chocolate shops.
