The bar has a welcoming fire and is decorated with traditional Kikuyu handcrafts and sepia prints reminding you of the local culture and heritage. The fireside comforts against the evening chill of this unique tropical mountain environment. Reviews
We just returned from a truly serene and rejuvenating weekend spent at Serena Mountain Lodge. Very pleasant climate and with the recent rains everything is bathed in green. The lodge is interestingly built overlooking a watering hole, frequented by many animals. We saw water bucks, bush bucks, buffalo, Egyptian geese, mongoose and Sykes Monkeys. The staff is very attentive and helpful from Isaac the manager to Mary at the reception and George at the restaurant.
We had a lovely stay.
We stayed at the Serena Mountain Lodge on our way from Samburu to to Lake Nakuru. What I appreciated about this place was the Flora and Fauna. I was actually shocked to see pine trees in Africa, but then this is an alpine location. In the guide books this place is compared to a ship, which is partially due to the use of wood and perhaps to the somewhat cramped quarters (rooms are a bit small). All the rooms face the watering hole, which is the place where the original owner used to hunt his game back when it was legal to do so. Today, the game is not quite as plentiful, but we did see Cape Buffalo, Bush Bucks and some water Foul. We did spend an enjoyable hour and a half with Jacob and Jacob, the local biologists, taking a hike about the property, but otherwise our time there was pretty quiet, which is not all bad as long as that is what you are looking for.
We stayed at the end of March 2018 as a family of 3.
This was a refreshing change to the game lodges we had stayed at on safari. It is basically a giant tree house, similar to the famous Tree Tops but I thought this had a nicer, less enclosed feel to it. Yes, it is dark inside as it is made from wood but to me that gives it a unique feel.
We had a spectacular view of the water hole from our room, and we could lay in bed and watch the animals.
We went on the nature walk, however the weather was against us but the hotel had wellies and waterproofs for us all and even laid on tea and biscuits half way round. Nice touch, but given it was raining so hard our cups were filling with rain, we just wanted to crack on.
The lunch was exceptional but dinner not so. There was a couple of choices on the menu, and a small buffet of salads and deserts.
This is a great place to stay if you are adding an overnight at Mt Kenya, and given how different the scenery is to the big reserves like Masai Mara or Samburu, if you have the time it is worth it to get a fuller experience of Kenya
