Beautiful lodges and restaurant, knowledgeable guides, the river safari in particular brought us close to spectacular wildlife and when we left our wash-bag behind it was delivered to us on the same day, the friendly staff could not do enough for us!
Many claim that you have to go to South Luangwa/Zambia to see "real wildlife". While it is true that you definetely should go to South Luangwa if you absolutely want to see lions, leopards and wild dogs, there are a number of reasons I prefer Mvuu Camp. First: take the speed boat from Liwonde to go there. Its really fantastic and in the cold season hippos are out on land at midday, by dozens. Second: unless SL you just have one camp and one lodge on the river front. If you want a lodge in SL that has a comparable location, without any neighbors, you pay double the prize, or more. Third: if you cannot afford the super lodges in SL (Shenton, Robin Pope, Bushcamp, Lion Camp etc) you will meet many many other cars from all the mid-range and budget lodges in Mfuwe sector. At night it becomes very unpleasant in SL with all the cars chasing the leopards. Much more relaxed in Liwonde. Of course SL is many times bigger BUT: if you only stay in Mfuwe sector you will only see 1 % of the park anyway as you have to be back at certain times. Fourth: BOAT safaris. They are the heart of Mvuu, and they are wonderful, especially the early morning one. Can't do that in SL at all (with a few exceptions in rainy season). Liwonde its all-year round. There is no better way to approach hippo, crocodile or elephant. And game watching is good all-year round on the river. Fifth: you can do walking safaris all-year round in Liwonde (in SL its forbidden in the green season, too dangerous). Sixth: the landscape is at least as beautiful, if not more beautiful and varied. Seventh: bird life is on par or even better. Eighth: the chalets of Mvuu Camp are just perfect. You don't need anything facier. Best bedding, great layout, great views. Cooking is top, as are the guides.
So if you are already in Malawi or plan to go there: if you can live without the cat sightings (I know, they introduced cats in Liwonde as well, but it will take time to see them every day...) I would really recommend to save money and stay some days in Liwonde. Such a beauty.
Mvuu Camp is situated inside the Liwande National Park and is a great place to stay and see the wildlife. The camp was very comfortable with a large bar / dining area with open views. The food was good, buffet style, dining. We stayed there for three nights while on a Malawi tour organised by the Responsible Safari Company. Our family cabin was really comfortable with a veranda overlooking the Shire river. We could watch Fish Eagles in the tree outside and had warthog and impala grazing on the grass to one side. We could even hear the hippos in the river. The safari's were excellent and we did them by landrover, boat and on foot. Our guide, Tom, had an amazing knowledge of the birds, animals and plants of the area and was really good at explaining it. We saw so many animals and birds that it would be impossible to list them all but the highlight was from one of our boat safaris, watching a heard of 50 female and young elephants drinking from the river and eating the river grasses. Sundowners were also an experience. A Malawi Gin and tonic followed by a night time drive back through the bush with an extra guide (Macleod) acting as wildlife spotter spotter with a big torch. All together an amazing experience and not to be missed when visiting Malawi.
Exceptional, we enjoy a lot, but honestly the meals are not as expected, I thing it can be better, especially at lunch time. Also you could offer another option (so that you could choose between two dishes)

Liwonde National park was great, the receptionist was good. The tour guide was knowledgeable of the park. We saw elephants, hippos, impalas, monkeys, waterbucks and warthogs.
