The Reserve is unusual in many respects; the rich diversity of the vegetation in the reserve is a reflection of its complex geomorphology.
The diverse habitat in the Madikwe Reserve, from acacia savannah to riverine, ensures a unique combination of species such as springbok, gemsbok, sable and impala.

Our knowledgeable and highly qualified guides take guests out on safari twice daily. The most fabulous experience. We could not have had it any better, very friendly staff, exciting trips with a very knowledgeable guide. The most amazing holiday we could have had. We would absolutely recommend Tau Game Lodge for a safari holiday. We loved every minute of the 2 days we stayed there.

We stayed at Tau Lodge for 4 nights and it was just spectacular. Here’s how the daily routine goes:
5:00 am – wake up call for morning game drive
You get a call to remind you to come over to the main lodge area!
5:30 am – game drive begins with your ranger after coffee and muffins
Your day begins seeing these wonderful, wonderful animals and time with your ranger.
8:30 – 9:00 am – return after all the wonderful animal viewing for a delicious breakfast that included fresh juices, made to order omelettes/eggs, fruits and much more.
10 am – 1 pm – on your own to shower, walk around a bit and just relax
1 pm – lunch at the lodge
4:00 pm – afternoon tea prior to the game drive
4:30 pm – game drive begins with your ranger
8:30 – 9:00 pm – return to the lodge for dinner
Overall, Tau just provides an absolutely wonderful experience. Their staff are just so focused on making sure guests are happy! We had Kgomotso (key-mote-so) as our ranger/guide, and she was just wonderful and we were so thankful to get her. We had two other couples with us on the drives for two days and they we had her all to ourselves. Kgomostso is a local who became a ranger and she is so keen in spotting animals and knowing the details of what each of the animals are like, their tacks, etc. Typically, there is a stop on the drive where you can have coffee in the morning and drinks on the evening drive.

The whole experience and seeing 4 out 5 of the Big 5 was quite amazing. We saw cheetahs, lions, zebras, hyenas, elephants, giraffes and so much more!

Highly, highly recommend Tau!

We just spent 5 days there and had an amazing time. All of the staff were great as was the food. Had an amazing massage at the spa. First safari, and we saw and amazing variety of animals. Madikwe is a great park and our guide Kgomotso was amazing at finding the animals. Thanks everybody for a great trip

Comfortable rooms, good food and friendly staff. Our ranger, Daniel, had a passion for the bush and all its creatures. In front of the lodge is a large body of water filled with water lilies and water birds. From the comfort of the room, we spotted elephant, rhino, lion, various antelope and many, many bird species. You could even skip a game drive or two and just stay in to enjoy viewing animals coming for a drink, or the geese squabbling.

So, we took the more affordable option of a taxi transfer as opposed to the plane - we knew it would be a long ride - circa 5 hours but with an entertaining and well informed driver the trip was 100% justified.

Now, about Tau - what can you look forward to? Comfortable accommodation, good food and ANIMALS! - lots and lots of wonderful animals.

Let’s start with the “elephant in the room” - it really was nearly that close - our room overlooked the waterhole and it’s fair to say that the elephants love water (& mud), chasing ducks, chasing crocs, chasing each other - the measure of our time at Tau is that by the time we left I was circa 10 pages in to an 800 page read ( which was finished by the time we got back to the UK) - there is no time to read - constant, wonderful animal distractions.

Great ranger (Damien/Gabien) - passionate about the wildlife and provided some excellent insights into the natural world.

Lovely place, lovely people - no more words for the animals.

Recommended.

October is the right time to visit Tau. Grasses are low, water is spare, and the animals are abundant. Our group was lucky enough to see a lion kill and a cheetah kill on the same day! Our guide Derek was incredibly knowledgeable, always checking tracks and scat for clues of nearby animals and finding/seeing animals & birds that the rest of us completely missed. Sleep was a little difficult with the birds making noise in the water hole, but it was the elephant feasting on the tree overhanging my balcony at 5am that was the true early-morning surprise. Nothing like looking our your window at two massive tusks and a trunk. Amazing way to wake up, unforgettable experience.....Can't say enough about the staff. The food was fantastic, especially considering the remoteness of the location. Every detail was covered, from morning espresso to high tea. PS: I'm not a "review" person, and this will likely be my only review this year, so know that this place is the real deal and the people are exceptional. Enjoy your stay!

I spent two nights at Tau Lodge whilst visiting Madikwe Game Reserve. The staff were friendly and helpful and the accommodation and food were great. What sets Tau apart from many other lodges is the large water hole in front of the restaurant and rooms. Amongst the parade of animals that visited to drink, bathe or feed were elephants, zebras, giraffe, crocodiles and a multitude of antelope and birds. The reserve provided many memorable close encounters of the furred kind including cheetahs, optimistic lion cubs stalking impalas and male lions on a kill. The safari experience was enhanced by our guide Damien who in addition to spotting the big game took time to show us some of the less glamorous animals such as hares and dwarf mongoose.
My only disappointment was not seeing the reserve's pack of wild dogs despite Damien's best efforts. I guess I'll just have to visit again!

Close to the Botswana border, malaria free, this lodge offers quaint rooms onto a busy watering hole . The receptions and social areas are close to the rooms but far enough to ensure room privacy. The Game viewing was spectacular, in 3 game drives we saw 100's of elephant, three male lions from two separate prides, cheetah, leopard, Wild dog, buffalo, brown hyena and lots of plains game. The daily visitors to the watering hole at the lunch time proves for great in house entertainment, herds of elephant come for a drink, cool off in the water, followed by a mud bath. Good bird life too.

This was one of the most incredible places we've traveled. From the beginning, you are greeted by the manager, your ranger and staff. The food was unbelievable and the service even better. We were joined for lunch everyday by a herd of ~30 elephants that played in the watering hole right in front of the lodge. Absolutely incredible.

The trip, however, was truly made special by our ranger, Declan. He was a wealth of knowledge and joined us for dinner in the evenings to further enrich the experience. The game sightings were spectacular and we couldn't have hoped for a better safari.
