The Tunisian city of Mahdia is a kaleidoscope of history and heritage and promises travellers an exciting and sentimental look at the turbulent past the city was borne out of. Located on the east coast of the country south of the prominent tourist destinations of Sousse and Monastir and north of Tunisia’s second most important city Sfax, Mahdia is a jewel tucked away it seems waiting to be rediscovered.
Rediscovered because the city had already been in place during the occupations of the Phoenicians and Romans, and in 921, Mahdia was proclaimed the capital of Tunisia and became the centre of a horrific power struggle between the caliph of Cairo and other local sovereigns. Mahdia was continuously battered by nomads, Sicilian troops, and Genoese navies, and attacked by pirates, and then knights from Malta and Spain, before the Spanish eventually burnt down the city and destroyed it.
