Located in the Overberg in the Western Cape of South Africa, Gansbaai is a hour and a half drive from Cape Town or 180 kms away. "Gansbaai" means "Goose Bay' in Afrikaans - the origin of the name comes from the many geese that were found in the area in these early days. Gansbaai was established around the fishing industry, life in Gansbaai is still very much associated with the sea through the fishing industry and marine eco tourism: renowned for good fishing, fine boat-based and land based whale watching, but over recent years it has really established itself as the great white shark capital of the world. In 1990, South Africa was the first country in the world to protect the great white shark.

For those who are a little adventurous and enjoy the company of other travellers, you can decide to stay at a Backpackers. Often having to share a room with others as well as costs, it is incredibly inexpensive. Often the best choice for those who may be just passing through or will be occupied for the majority of their day. It comes with the most basic amenities and is often formed as part of a bar or similar establishment.
