More info about Gateway Theatre of Shopping

It’s big and it keeps getting bigger. With two upgrades already having been recently completed, further extensions are planned for this monster of a centre in Umhlanga on the KwaZulu-Natal coast. The Gateway Theatre of Shopping is 22ha of retail and entertainment space and one of the largest malls in the world. Here, visitors can enjoy a full day of fun without leaving the centre.

Opened in 2001, the Gateway Theatre of Shopping has over 400 shops with all major chain stores occupying space alongside high-end fashion boutiques, and specialist, home ware and sports stores.

Electric Avenue on the 2nd level provides entertainment for young and old that include arcade games, tenpin bowling, dodgems and go-karting. The Manhattan bar lounge offers late night entertainment with local DJs on the decks.

On the same level are the movie theatres, eighteen in all with an additional six Art Nouveau theatres and two 3D cinemas.

The Barnyard Theatre hosts dinner and show evenings. Theatregoers can expect to see top comedy shows and live music acts while dining on good fare.

On the rooftop is a 5-a-side football venue, with 4 synthetic fields and a clubhouse.

Mr Funtubbles is an old school funfair that provides entertainment for parents with young children. It’s an ideal indoor venue and safe place to host a birthday party.

For teenagers (and older), the 4000m² skate park designed by legend skater Tony Hawk is popular, while the Wavehouse is a fun place to test your surfing skills on high intensity waves.

The centre has over ninety restaurants and alongside the centre is the Gateway Hotel.

Expos, charity events, auctions and competitions are regularly held at the Gateway to attract the crowds, after all, the centre is in unending competition with Umhlanga’s warm weather and inviting beaches! A Twitter feed and Facebook page keeps regulars updated on happenings at the Gateway.

Shopping hours at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping are 9h00 to 19h00 on weekdays and slightly later on weekends. During the festive season, the centre remains open until 21h00 every evening.
