More info about Lady Grey

Founded in 1856, Lady Grey was originally a farm but today it is an active town where adventure racing takes place and an arty town that hosts the annual Lady Grey Easter Passion Play. Lady Grey is situated in a valley below the Witteberg mountain range and is named after Cape Governor Sir George Grey’s wife Lady Eliza Spencer. Waaihoek was bought by the Aliwal North Dutch Reform Church to establish a new congregation and today this beautiful Sandstone church is a National Monument. Lady Grey is also known for its railway track, where the train has to maneuver backwards and forwards up the slopes in some areas, but unfortunately this railway line is no longer operational. The only way you can travel backwards in time is to visit the museums or take a historic and botanical tour around town. Cool yourself in the Lady Grey Dam that was built in 1925. The wall is 25m high and you can swim in the rock pool or walk up a natural staircase to the top of the dam wall. A strict catch and release policy keeps the best fishing waters in South Africa rich with yellow fish and trout. Annual events vary from sporty to arty. Over the March Human Rights long weekend, an ultra event every day characterises the War trail Tri-Challenge that has attracted adventure junkies since 2000. 'South Africa's ultimate endurance race' in the 140 km mountain wilderness sees ultra marathon athletes traverses over the top of the Witteberge. For the more sedate tourists, the Lady Grey Agricultural Show draws botanical enthusiasts in July.
