There are myths surrounding Lake Fundudzi so ancient and oft-told that they have become ingrained in the culture of the Venda tribe who reside in this part of the Limpopo Province in South Africa.
Lake Fundudzi is a vast inland fresh water lake spanning 5km in length and 3km at its widest, and formed by a landslide that partially blocked the flow of the Mutale River.
The Venda people regard themselves as the custodians of the lake and in their culture, the lake is considered the most sacred of places. Visitors require permission from the local Vhatatsindi chief to visit and when doing so, must show respect by performing a greeting ritual that involves facing away from the lake and bending down to look at the lake through spread legs.
