It was in this tiny village in the Eastern Cape that the world said a final goodbye to an icon. Qunu in the Eastern Cape is where Nelson Mandela was laid to rest on December 15, 2013 following a state funeral, and attended by the world’s most powerful current and past presidents, the Pope, the Dalai Lama and other prominent dignitaries.
Rolihlahla Mandela was born in a village nearby in 1918 but spent much of his childhood in Qunu. He was schooled in the village and a teacher gave him the name Nelson, a customary practice whereby schoolchildren were given westernised names. Thus the name Nelson Mandela was to become known to the entire world on his epic life journey to ensure racial equality.
